Pétanque by the Sea: A French Riviera Moment in Singapore

Pétanque, sunshine and a hint of French Riviera flair on the East Coast, very much a French thing to do.

Once a year, the French Chamber’s iconic Pétanque Tournament turns East Coast Park into a scene straight out of the Côte d’Azur. Metallic boules clink on the sand, the sea breeze rolls in, and business conversations slow down into something far more relaxed, convivial and very French in spirit.

On 28 March, members and friends of the French community in Singapore gathered for a full day of play, apéritifs and seaside atmosphere, proof that French lifestyle is not just about gastronomy and fashion, but also about taking time, being outside, and enjoying simple pleasures together.

Pétanque is the ultimate jeu de vacances: a social game where metal balls are thrown as close as possible to a small wooden ball, the cochonnet, ideally with a glass in hand and friends watching from the sidelines. It is easy to learn, surprisingly strategic and wonderfully democratic, beginners, regulars and “only-on-holiday” players can all share the same court.

In Singapore, the tournament has become a yearly rendez-vous for the French Chamber community, mixing friendly competition with networking, a long lunch, and the kind of light-hearted banter one usually finds in a village square in Provence. Perfect material for an after movie to relive the day, from the first throws to the final prizes.

Behind the scenes, many So Chic members helped bring a touch of French art de vivre to this edition. A huge thanks to Bastille Bakery, Le Petit Croissant, Bonne Maman, Pernod Ricard, Citadelle Gin, Vintage Wine Club and Lillet who added flavour, refreshment and French gourmet charm to the day.

Gifting partners also played their part in elevating the experience: Pernod Ricard, Château Canon Chaigneau, Citadelle Gin, Bar Roque Grill, Merci Marcel, L’Angélus, Les Bouchons, L’Entrecôte and Decathlon contributed prizes and treats that echoed everything So Chic stands for : French taste, conviviality and lifestyle, right here in Singapore.

Very much a French thing to do, from the pétanque courts of Provence to the seafront of East Coast Beach.
