DIY: easy and quick french Croque Monsieur recipe !

Croque Monsieur is a very famous french dish, served in bistrots and particularly popular among french families! Tasty, comforting and easy to make, it can be customized in multiple versions and will please both adults and children!

Ingredients:

For the traditional Croque Monsieur:

  • Sliced bread loaf
  • Butter
  • Ham
  • Cheese: tradionally emmental or comté (but you can put any type of cheese you prefer)

To realise a Croque Madame,

  • add an egg to your grocery list!

For the side dish:

  • Salad or roquette
  • Homemade vinegar with Balsamic vinegar, olive oil and mustard

Instructions:

  1. Butter the slices of bread on one side.
  2. Place 1 slice of the ham of your choice on one slice of bread.
  3. On the other slice of bread, place the cheese. The quantity depends of how cheesy you want it to be!
  4. Close the sandwich by putting the two slices on each other.
  5. Butter the top side of the sandwich and sprinkle it with some additional cheese. For the croque madame version, replace this step by the following: In a non-stick frying pan, cook the eggs one by one (one per croque madame). Season and place them on each croque madame.
  6. Put in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes at 180°. You can also chose to cook it on the pan.

Voilà, it’s ready! Serve it with a side of greens and a touch of vinaigrette!

The sweet version

What is better than melted chocolate with banana? Here is the dessert version of the croque monsieur:

  1. Place 2 or 3 chocolate pieces on one slice of bread.
  2. Cut the banana into slices and place them above the chocolate.
  3. Put another slice of bread on the banana to form a sandwich.
  4. Put it in the oven for 5 to 8 minutes at 180°. You can also use the pan as an alternative!

If you are feeling extra creative, try some new associations: chocolate with strawberries, or a choice of your favorite fruit!
