True to its mission of reinventing classic plays for today’s Singapore, Wild Rice is proud to present Tartuffe in a surprisingly modern and dark adaptation of French playwright Molière’s satirical masterpiece. A wealthy family begins to unravel when the head of the family, Orgon, befriends Tartuffe, a seductive and greedy man who masquerades as a man of faith. Even if Orgon’s entourage perceives the imposture, Tartuffe will use every pernicious means to get his hands on Orgon’s house, wealth and feelings. Will he succeed in fooling those who have placed their trust in him? The drama of this play revolves around this plot, which denounces false devotion and highlights all the ills of society. The visionary ingenuity of this play spans the centuries, as the subjects evoked have never ceased to burn our lips: to be or to appear, to dupe or to be duped, to tell or to be told, devotion or fanaticism.
