Yoko Choi’s “Journeys” Exhibition at Art Porters Gallery
Our new exhibition, Journeys by UOB award winner Yoko Choi is now open for free and easy preview!
In Journeys, Yoko Choi explores the therapeutic and healing potential of art-making through repetitive marks and rituals. This exhibition takes audiences through her works in four parts – The Begining, City Wandering, Contemplation and Nature, each part signifying a stage in the artist’s journey of venturing into the unknown and discovering the self.
The years 2014 to 2016 were particularly challenging for Yoko as she relocated from her home country Hong Kong, to Singapore. The artist experienced overwhelming emotions of grief, fear, and cultural shock, while questioning her identity. At that point in time, art was the only safe space where Yoko could seek solace – to find and be herself. As she immersed herself in the process of creating repetitive marks, Yoko became increasingly aware of the emotional needs to find comfort and a sense of control. Retrospectively, the artist reflected that her artmaking processes were indeed journeys of healing that helped her transition to a new place, a new home.
The show is already installed and it officially opens on Saturday 9 October and runs till 7 November 2021.
