An Ode to Nature by Van Cleef & Arpels: Where Nature Becomes Timeless High Jewelry

Until the 25th of August, the exhibition Ode to Nature, or Les Jardins Secrets by Van Cleef & Arpels can be discovered at the Raffles Arcade. With dozens of the most elegant creations with archival pieces from the 1940s to the 1990s, the exhibition illustrates the center of artistic inspiration to the Maison honoring the natural world with splendor and mastery. 

Founded in 1906 and born out of the marriage of Alfred Van Cleef and Estelle Arpels, the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels has spent more than a century creating exquisite jewelry and timepieces embodying elegance, imagination, and timeless French artistry. With their boutique found at 22 Place Vendome, the Maison has been celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship, poetic creations, and enduring spirit of innovation.  

More than a jewellery house, Van Cleef & Arpels embodies a distinctly Parisian approach to luxury – blending heritage with imagination and sophistication. Today, its creations continue to attract jewelry lovers around the world.  

From delicate flowers to graceful butterflies, nature has inspired Van Cleef & Arpels for more than a century. In An Ode to Nature, visitors are invited to explore this enduring connection and discover how the Maison transforms the beauty of the natural world into extraordinary high jewelry, celebrating the artistry and imagination behind every creation.  

Located in the historical site of the Raffles Arcade, An Ode to Nature illustrates how nature has been an epicenter of inspiration for the Maison with splendor and reverence. With nature originating from throughout the globe interpreted, the poetry of the plant and animal universes are vivid, stylized, and enchanting.  

One of the most captivating pieces that can be viewed is the Orchis set, made of a necklace, pin, and earrings. With pearls adorning the creations, the inspiration behind the set being an orchid not only calls back to a theme relevant to Singapore but a 

Perhaps the most striking, however, is the Saint Louis clip presented. From 1974, the clip features a flower motif with rounded petal shapes and flat, colorful panes outlined in gold reminiscent of Van Cleef & Arpel’s signature Alhambra motif with its soft four-leaf clover silhouette.  

History is also rooted in the very creations on display, such as the Lion inspired clip and pendant pieces. Evidencing a part of the natural cementing of the lion’s presence in the Maison Van Cleef and Arpel’s, the recurring motif angles a unique dimension of the House’s creations.  

Nonetheless, while the entirety of the exhibition leaves a lasting impression down to the most intricate of details, the beating heart present throughout each of the pieces is the vibrancy of the colors building weight into each creation. The brightness of each pigment gives rise to a spirit and liveliness to every creation, as best illustrated by a selection of fauna-centered pins in which the essence of the beings is brought to life.  

Forms and shapes also create a flow in the flora, from the movement like a light breeze through intricate work on the Two-Leaf Clip to the expressions adorning animal-inspired pins throughout the creations on display.  

Accompanying many of the pieces are also archival documents putting under the spotlight sketched out elements of the creations, presenting how an artistic vision can become a reality through craft and artistry.
