Merci Marcel opened a weekly wine club a few weeks ago, creating a space in which wines of varying themes every week can be discovered and savored at their Tiong Bahru location.
Their goal? To take us through a journey across their wine selections through different themes, including the lesser-known and more niche options that are just as delightful, accompanied by house made tapas which accentuate, vary, and bring to light different impressions with every sip and bite.
So Chic was recently invited to discover three glasses under their ‘Biodynamic & Low-Intervention Wines’ selection and experience the journey of some of France’s most elegant flavors.
Since their founding 7 years ago, Merci Marcel has made their presence known throughout Singapore with their success at bringing French flavors to all their tables across their growing and varying locations on the island.
Merci Marcel’s ability to captivate delights inspired by traditional French palates and cuisine within a tropical ambience is illustrated throughout the day – from breakfast, to lunch, to dinner, there is plenty of variety and highlights available at any moment. Their famed ‘ravioles de royans’ present the authentic French essence to the dishes they create all while their desserts offer Parisian sweetness.
Beyond what they physically bring to our tables, Merci Marcel also impresses through its bright, bohemian style decor which varies a little with every location, with greenery and carefully designed elements spread throughout their restaurants. Drawing inspiration from the French Riviera as well as the Balinese tropics, the mosaic flooring and complementary wood furniture complement each other to create the perfect level of chic to relish in delicious French cuisine — or, as they call it, an ‘unpretentious’ and yet elegant spot.
Their location in Tiong Bahru, being their original founding spot, portrays their ability to maintain original Singaporean architectural and structural fixtures all while creating what can only be described as a So Chic certified French atmosphere.
Our evening of ‘Biodynamic & Low-Intervention Winse’ took us through three glasses from varying regions of France by producers who pay special attention to ensuring their creations are ecologically aware and unharmful to the natural environment around.
The first glass presented was a white wine, ‘Thierry Germain, Saumur Insolite’ from 2024. With a refreshing flavor, the glass was accompanied by goat-cheese bites that bring under the spotlight the tangy and rich flavor of the dish.
Surrounded by the temporary exhibition by artist Vea Kant, the dish, wine, and abstract art all mesh together impeccably.
Our second wine of the evening was another white, Domaine de Montorge, Montagny 1er Cru 2022. From Bourgogne, the flavors of the wine differ so much from the first that the full horizon of possibilities in profiles of wine are truly showcased. The dash of citrus and slightly sweeter side of the wine were accompanied by three creamy mini-mushroom tarts, seasoned to perfection.
One of our favorite parts was the manner in which every wine is an element one is guided through by the expert staff at Merci Marcel who have studied the creations set forward for the evening.
There is also the possibility of ordering dinner a la carte in addition to the Wine Club – the perfect way to elevate you experience even further, depending on the wines in the selection! Our pick was the Roasted Chicken with Tagliatelle, which incited nothing to except miam.
With our final glass, a red ‘Domaine Oratoire St Martin’, Cairanne from 2022, we had a delicious side of fried arancini-style tapas, with some cheese-based sauce (our favorites of the night!).
A must-try experience for those looking to spend a classy, stirring evening of discovering new flavors and possibilities in the world of wine.
The lovely flavors we were taken through, all within the elegant setting and atmosphere of the restaurant’s area dedicated to guests of the wine club, create a delicious and delightful experience that makes it well worth a Thursday evening in pleasant company.
Merci Marcel’s Thursday wine club will continue different editions into August and September, so make sure to stay tuned to So Chic and Merci Marcel to discover the weekly themes and reserve your spot!
