French Recipe: Croque-Monsieur

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • ⅔ cup milk
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 4 slices white sandwich bread
  • 6 thin slices French ham
  • 4 thin slices Gruyère cheese
  • ½ cup grated Gruyère
  • Dijon mustard

Instructions:

Preparing the beschamel sauce

  1. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a small saucepan over medium heat
  2. Add flour and stir with a wooden spoon for 2 minutes
  3. Slowly pour milk and whisk constantly
  4. Add nutmeg
  5. Increase heat to medium-high and boil until sauce thickens, and whisk, about 2 minutes, til melted and smooth

Preparing the bread

  1. Preheat the grill to 200°C
  2. Butter bread
  3. Arrange and place bread buttered side down on baking sheets and let toast for 5 minutes

Putting it altogether

  1. Spread mustard on the untoasted side
  2. Put 2 slices of cheese and three slices of French ham on top
  3. Top with another piece of toasted bread
  4. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère
  5. Spoon the beschamel sauce on
  6. Pop into the grill, for around 5 minutes, until the cheese melts and turns golden and bubbling
  7. Serve immediately

Did you know

  • Use Gruyère to get a distinctive cheese flavour, or Emmental for a milder flavour, and Comté cheese will work well too
  • An easy addition of a fried egg transforms this into a delicious Croque-Madame. A few slices of tomatoes makes this a Croque-Provençal, potatoes and Reblochon cheese makes this a Croque-Tartiflette.
  • The Croque-Monsieur gets its name from the French verb “croquer“, which means crunch!
